A Gentleman in Moscow takes place in Russia in the early 20th century. During this time, Russia was changing to a Communist government after the Bolsheviks seized control of the country following the October Revolution of 1917. Royals and aristocrats were under attack after the October Revolution. Many royals and aristocrats were put to death or sentenced to hard labor. Their fate was entirely in the hands of the Bolsheviks. Their lives may have been spared, if they showed allegiance to the revolution, as in the case of Alexander Rostov.

He was saved from being sentenced to hard labor or execution because of a poem he took credit for that made it seem as though he was pro-revolution.

The author, Amor Towles, was inspired to write about the Count when he stayed in a hotel in Geneva. He had stayed in that hotel several times before, and he noticed people he had seen before. After realizing they lived in the hotel, Towles thought it would make an interesting subject for a novel.
